This process is used to stop the heart from beating and give the surgeons a bloodless field in which to work during open-heart surgery. The patient’s blood is diverted through a heart-lung machine, which does the work of both the heart and lungs. This machine oxygenates the blood and circulates it back through the body, leaving the heart and lungs motionless.
