Electrophysiology

An electrophysiology study (EP study) is a special catheterization test that is used to determine the location and cause of an abnormal heart rhythm and determine the best course of treatment. This test involves inserting electrode catheters into a peripheral artery and threading into the heart to study the heart’s electrical arrhythmias. The electrodes record the heart’s electrical signals and measure the electrical pathways of the heart. The doctor will attempt to reproduce the arrhythmia to define the exact location and type of arrhythmia, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of medication or other treatments in controlling the arrhythmia.
