She earned both her undergraduate and medical degrees from Howard University in Washington, D.C., and fulfilled her internship and residency requirements in internal medicine from the Veterans Administration West Los Angeles Medical Center. She completed a Fellowship program in pulmonary medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Presently she resides locally with her husband and their two sons. They are Bruins fans and enjoy playing tennis and traveling.
