intervertebral disc - one of the fibrous, oval-shaped wedges found between adjacent
vertebrae
intervertebral foramen - the hole created when two vertebrae are placed together. as
a spinal nerve branches from the spinal cord, it exits through this hole and travels to muscle
intravenous (IV) - a method by which a patient is fed through the vein to maintain
nutrition and hydration status

kyphoplasty - a relatively new surgical technique which involves reinforcing a

kyphosis - a forward curvature of the back bones (vertebrae) in the upper back

laminoplasty - a type of a surgical procedure which involves the opening up the
space of the spinal canal by splitting open the laminae
ligaments - fibrous tissue which connects bone to bone
lower back or lumbar spine - a complex structure that connects the upper body to
the lower body; consists of vertebrae, disks, spinal cord, and nerves
lumbar - of or pertaining to the part of the spine between the thoracic spine
and the pelvis
