Medications

The goal of medications in back or neck pain is to relieve pain, and reduce inflammation and muscle spasms. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which reduce pain and inflammation, are usually the first course of action. Over-the-counter NSAIDs include ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen sodium and ketoprofen. Prescription NSAIDs may also be used. In some cases, a course of oral steroids may be prescribed to treat inflammation. Acetaminophen is another type of pain reliever, although it is not as effective in treating the inflammation.

In severe cases of pain, narcotic pain relievers, such as those containing oxycodone or codeine may be used. These drugs are only for short-term use, however.

Muscle relaxants can ease painful muscle spasm. Valium, Soma, Skelaxin and Flexeril are commonly prescribed muscles relaxants. These drugs work by depressing the central nervous system, acting as a sedative.
