Minimally Invasive Surgery

Microsdiscectomy

A microsdiscectomy is a minimally invasive form of the discectomy, in which the herniated portion of the disc is removed. This procedure utilizes a microscope to view the disc during surgery. This allows the surgeon to operate through a smaller incision, causing less damage to surrounding issue. This procedure is not appropriate for all herniations.

Kyphoplasty

Kyphoplasty is another minimally invasive treatment for vertebral compression fractures due to osteoarthritis. This procedure can stabilize the fracture, restore height and reduce deformity. Under X-ray guidance, a tube is placed down to the vertebra. An inflatable balloon expander is placed through the tube and into the vertebrae. Very slowly, the balloon is inflated and the fractured vertebra is lifted up. The space created by the balloon is the filled with bone cement.

Vertebroplasty

Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive procedure to stabilize vertebral compression fractures caused by osteoporosis. These compression fractures lead to the collapse of the vertebrae. This procedure involves injecting bone cement into the vertebral body. The needle is guided using X-ray equipment. The cement hardens, and supports and strengthens the vertebra.
